Carrie Newcomer is a nationally-known singer/songwriter who grew up in Elkhart, Indiana, and now resides in Bloomington. She got her start in the group Stone Soup, but as a solo artist, has recorded 11 albums. Her styles include jazz, blues, folk and rock.

Malcolm Dalglish

Malcolm DalglishMalcolm Dalglish is a choral composer and director who presents programs of original folk choir and dulcimer music, stories, mime, rhyme, rhythm, and song. He is the founding member of the folk/Celtic trio Metamora, based in Bloomington, Indiana. His specialty is composing for choir. Children’s choirs throughout the world have commissioned his folk-inspired music.

The Great Divide

The Great DivideThe Great Divide explores American music beyond the acoustic boundaries of folk and bluegrass. By using the traditional instruments of bluegrass and intricate three-part vocal harmonies, they've developed a distinctive sound that blends rock, jazz, bluegrass, country, swing, folk, old-timey, and gospel.

The Great Divide is John Hoyt (banjo and vocals), Ron Beach (guitar and vocals), and Ric Dwenger (bass guitar and vocals). This acoustic trio, based in Delaware County, Indiana, has been making music together for more than 25 years.

Performance: 6 p.m. - 6:45 p.m.

Specialty: Three-part harmony and crisp instrumentals

Miscellaneous: The Great Divide opened for Leon Russell, Atlanta, Anson, Funderberg and the Rockets, Smothers Brothers, blues singer Sam Myers; has performed live on Minnesota Public Radio's "A Prairie Home Companion With Garrison Keillor; has remained a favorite band with the Indiana State Park's summer artists program for more than 10 years.

Students from the Landscape Architecture Department at Ball State University are creating environmental art projects on the Minnetrista campus.  Look for signage directing you to individual projects. 

Open Space: Art about the Land is open September 20 – October 19 at Minnetrista.  The juried show, presented in partnership with Red-Tail Conservancy, is located in Gallery 3. Open Space: Art About the Land is an art competition and exhibition which seeks to recognize and encourage artists in Indiana who derive creative inspiration from the land, or whose work celebrates the notion of open space as it relates to the land. www.minnetrista.net


Steven SiegelArtist

Steven Siegel, a frequent lecturer and visiting artist throughout the world

Presentation: "The Relevance of Image to Our Sustainable Ambition: The Art of Steven Siegel"

The artist will share his images dating back over 25 years and speak about the inspirations and beliefs that make him tick.

Time: 3:45-4:45 p.m., Indiana Room

Background

Siegel is well known for his large scale sited works made of pre- or post-consumer materials, such as newspaper, shredded rubber, aluminum and plastic. Some of his installed public sculptures in the United States and Europe are at least 12 feet tall. Siegel is a frequent lecturer and visiting artist throughout the world. He has earned numerous grants and awards for his work.

Goal during visit

While in Muncie, Siegel will conduct a site visit for a sculpture installation in 2009. The goal is to have Siegel return to Muncie in 2009 to make his piece with the aid of the Muncie community and Ball State University faculty and students.
